Spike Island Pier & Infrastructure
Spike Island Pier & Infrastructure
Spike Island, Cork Harbour has been redeveloped as a major Tourist Destination and Visitor Attraction by Spike Island Development Co. who commissioned the reconstruction of the Main Pier and the upgrading of the Island Infrastructure as part of the overall works. Pier works include a new Pontoon to facilitate visitor and staff traffic on all tides, the stabilisation of the Main Pier structure by drilling and grouting the existing traditional stone quay walls and deck together with deck infill, stone repairs, reconstruction works and repointing. A contemporary Visitor Shelter and health and safety requirements in terms safety barriers etc. were also provided. The Island was deficient in terms of basic infrastructure and Substantial Civil Engineering works were undertaken to provide new underground utilities such as Foul and Surfacewater Sewers, a new Sewage Treatment Plant, Water and Firemains and the upgrading of the Power Network.
